Located five blocks from the Grand Plaza and a short walk to the magical neighborhood of La Ermita, each of CalleOuvert’s six offerings is a unique layering of walls and plants, framed views and cocoon-like spaces, private and bright with pasta tiles, chukum walls, handmade ceramic light fixtures, and other decorative pieces. Private outdoor spaces invite relaxation in hammocks, while ensuite bathrooms, kitchenettes and personal workspaces rewrite the travel experience.
CalleOuvert offers shared spaces including an entry room, passageway, and Grand Paseo leading from the Mayan Arch to the main garden, which boasts a 10.5-meter lap pool, waterfall, koi pond, vegetable garden, and more than sixteen fruit trees.
Shared spaces include many sitting places to quietly contemplate or join in conversations with other guests and visiting artists, creating various opportunities for both creative inspiration and renewal. Begin your day with a sumptuous freshly prepared vegetarian breakfast, with vegan and gluten-free options also available upon request.
CalleOuvert is home to our two friendly dogs, Paloma and Allman, who love meeting guests. Two of the casitas feature enclosed outdoor spaces and welcome well-behaved pets. The owners, Beth and David, reside on the property as well.
David Brown
David Brown, Co-Creator of CalleOuvert, has dedicated his life to exploring the intersection of biodynamics and individuals’ perceptions of their physical bodies. As a teenager, David played drums for dance classes between his home country of Jamaica, and Toronto, Canada. David’s remarkable talent propelled him to New York City, where he joined the Martha Graham Dance Company, and quickly ascended to the position of Principal Dancer, performing several notable roles. He later co-founded and served as Artistic Director of the Monte/Brown Dance Company, touring and teaching globally for twenty years. David choreographed for numerous esteemed organizations, including Dallas Black, the Jamaica National Company, and Philadanco.
As a young adult, David participated in an extensive pilates program under the mentorship of Kathlyn Stanford Grant, who started to shape some of David’s beliefs and deeper understandings about body functionality and autonomy. Utilizing pilates and gyrotonic techniques, David’s rehabilitation work shifts perceptions and personal relationships to our bodies.
Over four decades, David has utilized his insights into the myths surrounding aging, the influence of gravity on alignment and posture, and neurological disorders to benefit his clients. David’s theories, eclipsing common methodology about the body and movement, may be further explored through his literary works: “An Available Body: A Radical Approach to Effort”, an autobiography, “About Tings”, and substack: “De Body Tings”. David has additionally designed and constructed a variety of exercise machines composed largely of metal and wood. David’s furniture and other art pieces are featured throughout CalleOuvert.
Beth Woronoff Brown
Beth, Co-Creator of CalleOuvert, designed, envisioned and built an immersive art and nature experience for travelers using organic architectural forms. Beth earned her Masters of Architecture from Parsons School of Design and founded In-Site Design in 2005. Over the past two decades, Beth has worked with various clients in Mérida and New York on residential and commercial projects. .
Beth has fully devoted herself to the arts, her journey beginning as a teenager in the local ice skating rink, her strong determination visible to master the sport through her daily five hour practice. After a decade of performing with the Ice Theater of New York, she founded, directed, and produced unique individual ice skating choreographies through her company, “Frozen Feet Theater”. Beth is a two-time Figure and Fancy World medalist, and has performed and been awarded medals in ice skating competitions throughout the world. She later trained in contemporary modern dance, through which community she and David met.
Some recent notable successes include Beth’s co-directing, producing, editing, and skating in a 2019 short film, “Kuma Brings The Pearls, A Love Story on Three Lakes”, which was featured in several international film festivals, and one of Galeria and CalleOuvert’s site specific performances, “Things That I know Are Not True, An Immersive Experience” which Beth wrote, directed and danced in. Finally, Beth has pushed the boundaries of painting (oil, watercolor, and acrylic) and ceramic sculptures, her work exhibited in galleries in New York, across the eastern United States, and Mérida. Much of Beth’s art is displayed throughout CalleOuvert, and for sale in local galleries.
